National Preparedness Month Is Coming

Prepare your Home or Business for Disasters

Every year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Ready.gov use the month of September to bring awareness to natural disasters. This September, National Preparedness Month will focus on planning for the worst. The theme is “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.” By taking action to prepare for natural disasters, you may prevent or reduce the devastating effects of a fire, flood, and storm damage to homes or commercial properties.

The goal of National Preparedness Month is to increase the number of prepared people. Individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions at home, work, businesses, school, and places of worship make a difference. Think ahead today!

Reduces Disaster Reconstruction Risk

Being prepared means being able to prevent property damage and reduce other types of disaster reconstruction needs. It also means you can help first responders in your community. If you’re trained on how to respond during an emergency, you can reduce risk for friends and family.

Events like fire damage, storms and winter weather, and flooding can create a cocktail for havoc. You can manage your disaster risk by planning ahead and preparing your property. Disaster reconstructions experts, who have seen the aftermath of these scenarios, can help you today to secure your home or business against these risks.

Make An Emergency Plan for Disasters

Events such as storms, flooding, hurricanes, and fires occur year-round throughout North America. That’s one major reason why it’s so important to be ready. Create a disaster emergency plan and practicing it with your family while learning to communicate effectively during the chaos after a disaster will help keep you and your community safe if disaster strikes.

Once you have your emergency disaster plan created, give the plan to every member of your household. Place the emergency plan in easy-to-find locations. Make contact cards with emergency numbers for each family member. Place the cards in purses, wallets, vehicles, and backpacks. This will make it easier to organize and act during and after a natural disaster.

Consider subscribing to local alert services that notify you with texts and emails regarding bad weather, closed roads, community crises and other emergencies. If you own a business, conduct training with your employees to keep them up to date on the procedures for major disaster events like fire, water damage and flooding, and hurricanes.
